The 21st Annual Herman Moot Court Competition concluded Thursday with oral arguments in the William B. Saxbe Law Auditorium before a panel of four distinguished judges and practitioners.

Finalists David Dirisamer, Melvis Houseman, Colin Kalvas, and Jim Saywell presented arguments in Maryland v. King, a case which considers whether warrantless collection of an arrestee’s DNA constitutes a Fourth Amendment search. The judges on the final panel, Ohio Supreme Court Justice Judith French ’88, U.S. District Court Judge Edmund Sargus, Belmont County Common Pleas Judge Jennifer Sargus, and Ohio Solicitor General Alexandra Schimmer, voted Kalvas as “Best Oralist.”

The winners of the Best Brief and Best Overall awards will be announced at a later date.

Every year the 2L competitors in the Herman brief and argue a case that is currently before the United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is expected to rule in Maryland v. King by the end of this term.
